Billets to Remember

By: Charles (Bill) Carpenter

BILLetsÔ for Life

According to Webster’s dictionary a billet is a short letter or note. I discovered that all of my relationships and encounters leave me with bits of wisdom and wit that prove inspiring and profitable to others. Why not share them with the world? So here it is; Bill’s first collection of BilletsÔ.

If it is going to be; it is up to we.

I know, you’ve always heard, “it is up to me”. While there is truth in this statement it is only half truth. Someone wise once said, “If you see a turtle on a fence post, it didn’t get there by itself.” All of the great ideas for getting ahead in life simply are not in one head. If we are to achieve our greatest potential it will be because we listen, learn and lean. I can’t always have the solutions, knowledge or experiences to get every job done. To insure I am always able I must create alliances, choose mentors, and rely on experts. With a strong network we can always make “it” happen; whatever “it” is.

Personal BILL of Happiness

            Be yourself

            Invest in yourself

            Love yourself

            Love others

Extremism always compromises credibility.

Extremism causes people to question your credibility because you make them uncomfortable or irritated.

The only thing worse than having a weakness is having a weakness you are not aware of.

All of my weakness can be corrected or compensated for.

To be consistently efficient I must consistently use all of the tools that are available to me.

You’ve never truly failed unless you’ve failed to learn.

Mistakes are just miniature seminars.

Safeguard your integrity as if it were your most valuable possession; it is.

Great negotiators never attempt to argue their own position until they can argue the opponent’s position better than the opponent can.

There is a thin line between assertive and aggressive, motive, when your motives are selfish you are being aggressive, when your motives are sharing you are assertive.

There are three building blocks of clear communication:

  • Appropriate Language

For credibility and familiarity chose appropriate vernacular.

Avoid acronyms.

  • Appropriate Tonality

Be sure your tonality does not confuse the message.

  • Appropriate Body Language

Body language and message should be congruent.

  • Appropriate Setting

Chose a conducive setting; a quiet setting is best for details and a private setting is best for reprimands etcetera.

A fool is never identified by silence.

To control/manage projects you must have the right balance of:

Ø      Energy

Ø      Control

Ø      Involvement

Credibility + Passion = Trust

Competency + Integrity = Credibility

Enthusiasm + Confidence = Passion

Leaders seek to be at least 3 things:

  • A friend
  • A mentor
  • A hero

Core Values

People without core values are always inconsistent, flippant and moody; they are always changing. Core values make us consistent because they give us a center from which we make all of our decision. If you have never sat down and put your core values in writing, doing so should become a top priority. If you have a spouse I recommend that you sit down and agree on your core values as a couple.

Someone once stated that priorities are the backbone of effectiveness; if this is true, and I believe it is, then core values are the foundation upon which your priorities must be built. Highly successful people are judicial, assertive and consistent; all three are a result of having core values. The following acronym will help you shape your core values.

Contribution (What can I give, what are my strengths, experiences and academia)

Order (systems support good habits that make us consistently effective)

Relationships (Healthy relationships keep me centered, energized and effective)

Empowerment (commitment to LLL ensures my marketable value and career success)
